Surface Value explores the structural and expressive possibilities of using the EbSynth software to apply movement to (potentially) unrelated still images. This is somewhat opposed to the software’s intended use as an ‘in-betweening’ tool for speeding up animation workflows. The video technically contains only 25 still images. The original stills being 'arrived at' in full clarity before each cut for the first half, while the second half begins with a still in full clarify before dissolving into the movement source.
In this case video footage of movement though urban and natural environments is applied to macro photographs of fire, creating revelatory juxtapositions and raising questions of how we define or value our environment versus how we represent it through media.
